Alto vs. Tenor Saxophone: Which Should You Choose?
When deciding to learn the saxophone, most beginners find themselves choosing between the Alto and the Tenor. While both produce that rich, iconic sax sound, there are a few key differences to keep in mind:
Alto Saxophone: Smaller, lighter, and pitched in E-flat. Because the keys are closer together and it requires slightly less air to produce a sound, I almost always recommend starting on the Alto Saxophone, especially for younger students (ages 8–9+) or smaller hands. It is much easier to manage physically while building your core technique.
Tenor Saxophone: Larger, heavier, and pitched in B-flat with a deeper, huskier tone. It is fantastic for jazz, blues, and rock solos. Older teenagers and adults can certainly start on the tenor if it’s their dream instrument, but keep in mind it requires a bit more breath support and physical strength to hold!
Once you learn fingerings on the alto saxophone, those same fingerings transfer almost identically to the tenor saxophone later on!
